How does Brofex TS Orange Flavored Syrup work?

Brofex TS is generally prescribed for short-term treatment of dry cough. It works by blocking the cough receptor present in the brain, which is known to cause cough. 

Side Effects of Brofex TS Orange Flavored Syrup

• Nausea and dizziness may occur, although adverse effects are rare.
• The drug does not produce analgesia, addiction, or significant CNS depression.
• Overdose may lead to excitation, confusion, and respiratory depression.

Quick Suggestions:

• Do not smoke as it might worsen your symptoms, so avoid tobacco intake.
• It is usually taken for a short time, until the symptoms clear up.
• Measure the syrup with a special dose-measuring spoon or cup, not a regular table spoon.
• Drink extra fluids to help loosen the congestion and lubricate your throat while you are taking this medication.
• It should not be administered to patients with a chronic cough or where the cough is accompanied by excessive secretions.
• Inform your doctor if your cough lasts more than 7 days, comes back, or occurs with fever, rash, or headache. These could be signs of a serious condition.

Indication of Brofex TS Orange Flavored Syrup

Brofex TS Orange Flavored Syrup (Dextromethorphan Polistirex) is used in the treatment of dry cough.

Pharmacology

Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide is a cough suppressant that acts centrally on the cough center in the medulla. Although structurally related to morphine, it lacks analgesic and significant sedative properties. Addiction has not been observed with prolonged use, even at higher doses.

• It is rapidly absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract and starts working within 15-30 minutes after oral administration.
• The Polistirex matrix formulation prolongs the release of Dextromethorphan, leading to a gradual and extended effect over 12 hours.
• It is extensively metabolized in the liver and excreted in urine as unchanged Dextromethorphan and its metabolite Dextrorphan, which also has some cough suppressant activity.
• Up to 50% of the ingested dose is excreted in urine over 24 hours, and about 8% of the dose is excreted unchanged in the first 6 hours.

Dosage & Administration of Brofex TS Orange Flavored Syrup

• Adults and children ≥12 years: 10 mL every 12 hours (max 20 mL/24 hours).
• Children (6-12 years): 5 mL every 12 hours (max 10 mL/24 hours).
• Children (4-6 years): 2.5 mL every 12 hours (max 5 mL/24 hours).
• Children <4 years: Not recommended.

Follow the advice of your physician regarding dosage.

Interaction

• Fatal interactions have been reported in patients taking therapeutic doses of phenelzine (a monoamine oxidase inhibitor) and dextromethorphan.
• Concomitant use of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) is contraindicated.

Contraindications

Brofex TS should not be used in combination with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy: Limited data exists on its use during pregnancy. Avoid during the first three months.
• Lactation: Unknown if dextromethorphan is secreted in breast milk; nursing mothers should avoid the drug.

Precautions & Warnings

Use Brofex TS cautiously in patients with liver disease as it is extensively metabolized by the liver.
